Rush Limbaugh is Wrong
In his June 27 open-line-Friday rant, our friend Rush Limbaugh unburdened himself at length on the subject of high energy prices. Most of what he said was true. He spoke of the hardships that high gasoline prices create for working Americans. He spoke of how the United States needs to provide as much of our own energy resources as possible. And he spoke of how Democrats are beating the bushes, looking to demonize someone else, anyone else, for their own culpability.
The World According to Barack – No. 3
July 20, 2007 – The Obama campaign launched a campaign to capture the conservative Christian vote. The campaign is called the “Joshua Generation Project,” named after Moses’ successor who led the Israelites into Canaan after they had wandered in the Sinai for forty years.
The World According to Barack, No. 2
June 20, 2008 – Obama spoke at a fundraiser in Jacksonville, Florida. In his speech, he said, “It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy.”
Tim Russert vs. the Media
Tim Russert, Senior Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief for NBC, long-time moderator of “Meet the Press,” died on Friday, June 13, 2008 after suffering a heart attack at the NBC studios in Washington.
New Orleans and Cedar Rapids
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the pipsqueak radical environmentalist who has chosen rabble-rousing as his life’s work, wrote an op-ed column placing the blame for Hurricane Katrina squarely on the shoulders of George W. Bush. His reasoning? Bush opposed ratification of the Kyoto Accords on “global warming.”
Dear John
Yes, the Democrats have decided to nominate a man who can only be described as the worst candidate ever nominated by either major party. He is inexperienced, he has little or no public record, what public record he has is so far left that it embarrasses even Democrats, he is dangerously naive, he is consumed by the issue of race, and he is married to a woman who is a racial seperatist. He is an empty suit with a glib tongue. Unfortunately, the Republican Party will nominate a man whose campaigning skills lie at the opposit end of the spectrum. Most of his oratorical shortcomings are correctable... with the right kind of coaching. But the question arises, is John McCain coachable? The record suggests that he is not.
Scott McClellan – A Mouse Under Foot
I have tried and tried to think of a parallel to Scott McClellan in modern history, but I cannot. The only man who fills the bill lived some 2000 years ago. His name was Judas Iscariot. Whatever made Scott McClellan think that he could write such a book, pocket his thirty pieces of silver, and hide from the aftermath is beyond understanding. He is putting up a brave front, for now, but it can't last.
Obama As National Unifier
The March 25 edition of the New York Times carried a political memo by Robin Toner, titled, “Obama’s Test: Can a Liberal Be a Unifier?” Toner begins by reminding us that, “At the core of Senator Barack Obama’s campaign is a promise that he can transcend the starkly red-and-blue politics of the last 15 years, end the partisan and ideological wars, and build a new governing majority.”
The Color of Obama’s Politics
In the wake of her narrow victory in the Indiana primary and Barack Obama’s decisive victory in North Carolina, Hillary Clinton attempted to make a strong case for her continued candidacy by playing the race card against Obama, claiming to have a “much broader base” on which to build a winning coalition. Citing an Associated Press article, she inched a bit further out onto the limb of racial politics and class warfare, saying that, “Senator Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans,” was on the decline, and that “whites in both states who had not completed college” were supporting her.
The Sad State of American Politics
On Thursday of last week, Barack Obama suggested that John McCain was "losing his bearings" for repeatedly suggesting that the Islamic terrorist group, Hamas, preferred Obama for president... which, of course, is precisely what a senior Hamas leader has said. That exchange was followed a few days later by an Obama speech in Beaverton, Oregon in which he said, "... Over the last 15 months we've traveled to every corner of the United States. I've now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit..." As of this date, John McCain has refrained from reminding Obama that there are only 50 states, and opining that, if Obama thinks he has campaigned in 57 states, the extra seven states must be located somewhere in the Twilight Zone... speaking of losing one's bearings. But then Obama said he had one state left to go... the state of Alaska and Hawaii. Or maybe he thinks there are 59 states... assuming he knows that Alaska and Hawaii are two different places... Whatever. This is a guy who attended grammar school in Indonesia, a first-rate private prep school in Hawaii, Occidental College in Los Angeles, Columbia University in New York, and Harvard Law School.. He must have been absent the day they taught geography. Anyway, it seemed a perfect week to comment on the sad state of American politics.
There is a Difference
The Tax Man Cometh
Benjamin Franklin wrote in 1789, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” But although the outcome is always the same when the grim reaper visits, the punishment the tax man inflicts can vary widely. Since the early 1980s — after Americans rejected Jimmy Carter and embraced Ronald Reagan and his tax cuts — the United States has benefited from relatively competitive tax rates. But if Sen. Barack Obama’s tax plan becomes law, the IRS will become one of the most punitive tax men in the world.
Oil Crisis Redress
WASHINGTON -- America's paralysis over the oil crisis is a textbook example of the ideological divide that has polarized our politics and hurt our economy in the process. Reducing the price of $135-a-barrel oil and $4-a-gallon gasoline is not that hard to do. This is not brain surgery or nuclear physics. We have it within our power to bring down the price of both by tapping into our vast resources and technology -- now.
Obama's Dry Hole
Democrats are in a vise this summer, pinned on one side by voter anger over $4 gas and on the other by their ideological opposition to carbon-based energy – so, as always, the political first resort is to blame Big Oil. The allegation is that oil companies are "stockpiling" leases on federal lands to drive up gas prices. At least liberals are finally acknowledging the significance of supply and demand.
As The Price Of Gas Goes Up, D.C.'s Energy Policy Silliness Does Too
The laundry list of excuses not to expand access to American oil was never convincing even when gas was $2.00 and gets less so as the price at the pump continues to rise. But the latest round of reasons is downright irrational, with some directly contradicting others. Here’s a rundown of some of the silliness:
Water Vapor, Nukes And The EPA
Something strange is afoot at the Environmental Protection Agency. It is no secret that EPA bureaucrats have been chomping at the bit to start regulating carbon dioxide ever since courts ruled that the naturally occurring plant food which is exhaled by every human being (even Al Gore) is a pollutant. Their exuberance recently emerged in the form of 258 pages that they leaked to the trade publication Inside the EPA.
Integrity Of The Senate At Stake
The Washington Post may have shifted its coverage of the Wall Street bailout bill from the front page to the business section, but the newspapers in Connecticut, Sen. Chris Dodd’s home state, are rightly keeping up scrutiny of the relationship between the Democratic senator and the banks that would benefit directly from Dodd’s bill.
"DRILL NOW!"
Members of Congress were swamped by telephone calls and e-mail messages Thursday demanding, "Drill now!" in response to a Republican call for increased American oil production to fight runaway gasoline prices. Lawmakers got little response to previous proposals intended to lower the cost of oil: alternative energy sources, a federal gasoline tax holiday, an excess profits tax on U.S. oil producers and pressure on foreign oil producers. In contrast, the demand to "drill now" (first urged this year by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich) has taken hold.
Holding The Left Accountable On Energy Prices
The most important thing to remember as the debate over energy prices becomes a major issue in 2008 is that liberals want Americans to pay higher energy prices. That is why they sue to stop natural gas drilling in Wyoming, new refineries in South Dakota and coal power plants nationwide. The whole purpose of the Lieberman-Warner carbon capping bill was to increase the cost of energy to force Americans to use less of it. But now Americans are beginning to catch on to the left’s game, and they are not happy...
The Useless U.N. At 'Work' And Spending Your Tax Dollars!
The top official of the United Nations Human Rights Council is concerned that there are "taboo" subjects that the council refuses to address ... can you guess what main subject would be taboo for the Human Right Council? That would be ANY discussion on Islamic Sharia Law.
More Than ANWR
Skyrocketing gas prices are rapidly changing Americans’ priorities. Voters routinely identify energy costs as either the second or third most important issue. Considering that any economist will tell you that high energy prices are a major cause of recent economic sluggishness, and that the economy has been the No. 1 issue on voters’ minds for some time, the cost of energy has quickly become a defining issue for the nation.
